The Department of Defense (DoD) recently brought on John Zangardi to serve as the new Principal Deputy CIO. Replacing Dave DeVries, Zangardi will be playing a key role in advancing information management, non-intelligence space systems, as well as satellite communications and telecommunications.
According to this recent FCW article, he served as the Navy’s acting CIO in 2014 and 2015 and previously held positions in the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Communications Networks Directorate and the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Dominance.
During his time with the U.S. Navy, Zangardi enhanced industry partnerships, as well as championed the Next Generation Enterprise Network contract, data center consolidation, the transition to cloud technology and DoD’s Joint Information Environment initiative (JIE).
It is expected that he will continue to support the JIE in the wake of the DoD’s August guidance titled, “Way Forward to Tomorrow’s Strategic Landscape.”
As highlighted by GovTransformer, this guidance will support better collaboration with industry, as well as expand the focus on cybersecurity and enhance oversight on technology spending. The plan also focuses on data center closures and optimization by calling on a new team to “to assess and recommend closures of the costliest and least-efficient facilities beginning in the first quarter of fiscal year 2017.”
Zangardi brings the right experience to help the DoD transform its IT efforts, while also advancing the need for critical industry solutions. This is why we are naming him as this week’s GovTransformer.
